What happens when we place improvised philosophical reflection in the context of musical improvisation? How do these two methods of expression differ, how are they connected, and what does this framework teach us about the practice of free improvisation?

“Performing Reflection” is part of a long-term artistic research project which wishes to provide new insights into the topic of open-form musical improvisation. It arises from the collaboration of the musician and researcher Ivar Roban Križić, and the philosopher Christian Grüny, who have previously presented it in the form of a concert followed by a discussion at the Museum of Applied Arts in Frankfurt am Main on November 17, 2022, and a residency with several public rehearsals/workshops and a concert at the Music Biennale Zagreb from April 17-19, 2023.

The starting point is the relationship between improvisation and reflection within and outside the musical practice. The two fields are exemplified by the applicants, who are also active on the other side – Križić is an active bassist in various musical contexts and is currently completing his doctorate in Artistic Research at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, while Grüny is a professor of Aesthetics and Contemporary Theories at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart and is also a performer. This dual expertise allows them to work on these two areas not as separate but directly interconnected. As part of the concept, the duo reaches out to various collaborators in an effort to broaden their perspective and exchange knowledge with actors from the local scene. For this concert, they will be joined by Ipek Göztepe and Alana Mcpherson from Graz, and Nikola Vuković and Thomas Grill from Vienna.

Mit „Krems“ erschien 2022 nun auch jener Liederzyklus in CD-Form, der 2020 im Rahmen des Festivals Glatt&Verkehrt uraufgeführt wurde und in dem Alex Miksch sein Verhältnis zu und sein Aufwachsen in seiner Heimatstadt thematisiert.

„Der Blues ist schlichte Form, und er ist Schicksal. Ein Schlüsselwort dieses ursprünglich afroamerikanischen Genres ist Authentizität. Wer den Blues singt, muss ihn erlebt, ja durchlitten haben. Das hat Alex Miksch gründlich. Auch in seiner Heimatstadt Krems. Nicht nur donauabwärts in Wien, wo er über Jahrzehnte verlässlich der Letzte an der Bar war. Dass er, immer wieder bedroht von Obdachlosigkeit und den gemütsverdunkelnden Qualitäten des Dämons Alkohol, seine Liedkunst weiterentwickeln konnte, grenzt an ein Wunder.“ (Samir Köck, Die Presse)

Es sind alle eingeladen mitzumachen, außergewöhnlichen Fähigkeiten
sind nicht erforderlich, nur die Freude am gemeinsamen Musizieren und
Interesse an elektronischer Musik!

Der GIK wurde initiiert, um einen Rahmen zu schaffen, in dem das
Jammen und gemeinsame Improvisieren mit allerlei akustischen und
elektronischen Instrumenten, sowie auch stimmlich erprobt werden kann.

Die Herausforderung dabei besteht in der Realtime-Interaktion und
auch -Klangverarbeitung, dem Begreifen von oft unbekannten Klangquellen
und Klängen und ein Gefühl dafür zu bekommen, wie diese musikalisch
miteinander funktionieren können. Im Vordergrund steht daher das
aufmerksame Zuhören, sich gegenseitig Raum geben und das
Experimentieren.

"Ich leite ein mit Gedichten, die an den geistigen Aufbau meiner Weltsicht heranführen. Dokumentiert wird das weiter in konkreten Anwendungsfeldern poetischer Politikkritik, die sich zu einem (nicht perfekten) Bau Politischer Philosophie zusammenfügen. Auch die Erotik kommt nicht zu kurz in, da sie einen wesentlichen Anteil an Empfindungsfähigkeit innehat und die Handlungen im öffentlichen Raum subtil beeinflusst.

Der Geist der psychologisch begründeten individuellen Revolte durchzieht den gesamten Gedichtband, bildet mein Politikverständnis zur Zeit der Fertigung des Buches ab (also vor 15-20 Jahren).Viele wichtige politische Fragen wurden in der Zwischenzeit ohnehin nicht gelöst, wirken weiter, brennend und dringlich."

Over the past decade and a half Mary has been persistently creating passionate, uncompromising work, raw, thought provoking, socially and creatively pushing against the current, dealing with subjects of authority, identity and conflict. Her work is as enchanting as it is polarizing, ranging from traditional folk to raw 60s garage, ambient with ethereal vocals and abstract synths, to experimental pop with African and South American rhythms when performing with her drummers (Your Government).

Mary toured in 40 countries with previous releases, the last of which were recorded with H.J. Irmler of Krautrock pioneers Faust and feature collaborations with Felix Kubin, Die Toedliche Doris and Julia Kent. Most recently she was invited by Animal Collective to perform at Le Guess Who? festival, released a Ukraine charity EP and curated a compilation for girls' education in Afghanistan.
